App Facebook Lite, Early this morning, Facebook published a brand-new, slendered down variation of their app dubbed Facebook Lite to the Google Play Shop. Focused on low-end devices in emerging markets where cellular data is a little slower, we have to confess, we were plenty delighted at the possibility of a 2G-friendly variation of the normally puffed up Facebook app.
Not long after installation, our optimism was consulted with cold difficult reality-- this app was bit more than a wrapper for the mobile web view (ie, it's almost similar to checking out m.facebook.com). Okay, so there are some crucial differences. There's no videos (like, at all) and unlike opening Facebook in your phone's web browser, Facebook Lite will supply you with push notifications on your Android device, useful if you're waiting on an essential message and wish to keep up with buddies without having to refresh the browser.
The trade off? Facebook Lite-- which is promoted as less than 1MB (252KB), however in fact took up 1.16 MB after installation-- requests a reasonable amount of consents from your Android gadget, similar to the complete fledged 114MB (after setup) regular variation of the app (just without the place data). Oh, did we discuss it's slow?
Even on WiFi, the app is sluggish to load, sluggish to scroll, and slow to change between News Feed, your messages, and alerts. Even with a high-end Snapdragon 801 equipped Android device, the "app" directly feels like molasses. But as we mentioned, you do get direct access to your messages without having to install Facebook Messenger, so there's that.
We believe Facebook truly had something here and were actually hoping for a quicker, lighter, less function heavy, Facebook app for those of who don't need all the frill of sticker label shops and so forth. Regretfully, Facebook Lite really just doesn't cut it.
